Jack Daniel’s & Uncle Nearest Green Distillery Tours: Bus Tour from Nashville
The story of these two distilleries is deeply intertwined. When Jack Daniel was a boy, he was taught the art of making whiskey by an enslaved man named Nathan "Nearest" Green. Later, when Jack opened the now-world famous Jack Daniel Distillery, he hired Nearest Green as his first Master Distiller. In 2017, the Uncle Nearest whiskey brand was introduced, and the Nearest Green Distillery was opened. This tour is your chance to explore both renowned distilleries and take a sip of history.

Nathan “Nearest” Green was born into slavery in Tennessee. He was also widely regarded as the finest whiskey distiller in the area. He is widely believed to be the perfector of the “Lincoln County Process,” where whiskey is filtered through sugar maple charcoal before barreling. This filtration process is what separates Tennessee Whiskey from bourbon. Nearest Green taught a young Jack Daniel the art of whiskey making.
Years later, after the Civil War when Nearest Green was a free man, Jack hired “Uncle” Nearest as his first master distiller, making him the first African American master distiller in the country.

Jack Daniel’s is about 75 miles from Nashville, about a 90-minute car ride. Thankfully, Nearest Green is located along the same route. If you take the bus tour from Tennessee Whiskey Tours, you will actually pass Nearest Green Distillery on the way to Jack Daniel’s!

There are some great places to get lunch in Lynchburg! We recommend Barrel House BBQ, Southern Perks, and the BBQ Caboose Cafe. If you book in advance, you can also eat at Miss Mary Bobo’s Restaurant, owned by Jack Daniel’s.
